Microsoft Word Tip

Section Breaks vs Page Breaks

All I can say is "The Truth Shall Set You Free!" In my opinion, the section break feature in Microsoft Word is one of the most powerful features. The day I learned to maneuver breaks was the day I was liberated from MS Word Hell!

Why a Section Break?

Sometimes you may want to insert a page break or a section break in a Word document before the application does it automatically. Section breaks are especially helpful when creating books or reports. For each section, you can specify formatting, such as header and footer appearance, sequence of page numbers, page orientation (portrait or landscape), and page margins.

Below are a few very helpful sites that will walk you through step-by-step on inserting the appropriate breaks for your documents.

  1. This was very helpful in my understanding the difference between a Page and Section break. I produce my department's newsletter and after viewing the link, I found that I can use both Ppage and Section break to enhance the layout of the newsletter. This was extremely useful.

  2. Other than typing papers for class, I haven't really held a position that required to me to do much more than the basics with the MicroSoft products. I am going to create a document in order to use and learn more about the "section break" and to get some hands on experience. Thanks for bringing to light something that I would probably never looked into on my own.

  3. I took a class last year believing that there would not be much for me to learn and sadly, this was one of the matters that I had issue with. Thank you! I'm printing this! Microsoft Word has a number of under utilized functions. Now this won't be one of them for me.
